The Art of CarsCARS!
Pixar Animation Studios and Petersen Automotive Museum launch The Art of Cars, an exhibit featuring pre-production artwork from the Golden Globe-winning film Cars and showing the process of creating its characters, personalities and locations. "The spirit of Route 66 is in every scratch on a fender and every curl of paint on a weathered billboard," notes director John Lasseter, who enlisted automotive personalities including Paul Newman and racing legend Mario Andretti to give life to the vehicles. The show includes more than 60 watercolor and pastel drawings, pencil and marker sketches, and three-dimensional pieces including life-size replicas of the movie's main characters: Lightning McQueen and his tow-truck buddy, Mater. 6060 Wilshire Blvd., L.A., 323.930.CARS. (The venue was then known as the Pasadena Art Museum.) The installation features a dozen Duchamp works acquired by Simon during and after the exhibition and photographs and ephemera from the retrospective itself. Among works displayed are examples of his landmark subversive "ready-mades"—made from found objects—and motor-driven "rotoreliefs." 411 W. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, 626.449.6840. Map Q19

Bryn TerfelMUSIC
IN RECITAL

Los Angeles Opera presents Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, opera superstar, April 20 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. "He can roar," wrote The New York Times, "with pain, with pleasure, with fierce indignation, filling the hall with full, strong tone. But he can also coo and purr at an extreme pianissimo, making a sound that stays audible only because there is so much in it to feel, as well as to hear." Hungarian pianist Andras Schiff continues his Beethoven cycle April 9 at Walt Disney Concert Hall as part of the L.A. Philharmonic celebrity series. Schiff plays sonatas No. 12 through 15, including Op. 27, No. 2, dubbed "Moonlight," and Op. 28, "Pastoral."
